It's been revealed that the relatively high street value of cocaine in Australia has attracted the interest of overseas cartels, which are now increasingly targeting the country with shipments. A confidential Australian Federal Police report outlines the concerns, Sydney's Daily Telegraph newspaper says. Seizures of cocaine in Australia have grown 20 per cent since 2003 and 1kg of the drug is worth $190,000 compared to $30,000 to $35,000 in the US - making Australia the most lucrative market in the world, the newspaper reports. The police report is being used to evaluate the threat from cocaine and allocate resources accordingly. The report goes on to say there has been a "generational shift" away from opiate-based drugs such as heroin towards cocaine. Source: SMH & Daily TelegraphComments (0)
